The 4th International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen
“I was always a great admirer of Chinese calligraphy and
ink painting” says Gelman. “When I received the invitation
to participate in The 4th International Ink Painting Biennial
of Shenzhen I decided to express my appreciation of this
traditional art form by creating something that's informed
by my daily work. At the moment, my studio is working on
a collection of skateboard designs. While working on the art
intended to be printed on skateboard decks I turned the
tables and made the decks themselves the subject of art.
simplicity of skateboard's shape allows for endless
expressions of ink on paper. My installation entitled “16
decks” is an investigation of free-hand and template-based
form, traditional and modern realities.” Actual scale
give a sense of presence and physicality to Gelman’s piece.
